When Faith Changed the Course: Alan Osmond’s Life-Altering Decision

There are moments in life when everything seems planned, organized, and already decided—until something unseen changes the direction of the road ahead. For Alan Osmond, one of the founding members of The Osmonds, such a moment arrived at the height of the group’s early success. It was a turning point shaped by faith, family duty, and a series of remarkable events that would leave a lasting mark on his life.

At the time, Alan had made up his mind to leave the group temporarily in order to serve as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Determined to fulfill what he believed was a sacred calling, he stepped away from performing, prepared his luggage, and even got a haircut in anticipation of two years of service. His brother Wayne Osmond was prepared to take over his responsibilities in the group, with Alan personally teaching him the musical parts he would need to perform.

But there was another complication looming over him: military service. Like many young men of that era, Alan had received notice from the draft board and was ordered to report for a physical examination during the height of the Vietnam War era. Alan believed he had secured a deferment because of his missionary plans, yet the uncertainty remained.

Then came the inner struggle.

Just days before his departure deadline, Alan felt an unsettling spiritual impression—something, as he described it, kept “bugging” him. Unsure of what it meant, he turned inward through fasting and prayer, seeking clarity. What he discovered surprised even him. The feeling was not warning him away from service; it was guiding him toward a different mission entirely.

In the stillness, Alan came to believe he was not meant to leave. He was supposed to remain with his brothers.

That realization was not easy to deliver at home. Early one morning, he woke his mother to tell her he no longer believed he should go on his mission. Her immediate concern was practical and urgent: what about the military draft? Alan had no answer—only a strong sense of peace that things would somehow work out.

What happened next seemed almost unbelievable.

During a family prayer, the phone rang. On the line was a photographer friend from Life Magazine, calling unexpectedly to ask what the Osmond boys were doing about military service. Learning of Alan’s situation, the friend suggested he contact an Army colonel and inquire whether there might be another path available.

Alan followed the advice, though it initially appeared hopeless. More than 600 people were reportedly waiting in line ahead of him. Yet just as he was about to leave, someone called out and asked if he had any useful skills. Alan mentioned typing, shorthand, and stenography—skills not often associated with a pop performer.

The response was immediate: that was exactly what they needed.

He was offered the chance to report to boot camp immediately, train, and then return to serve as clerk for the 144th Artillery Unit. Alan accepted, and by the next day, he was on a bus heading for military training.

What followed was another chapter of unexpected growth. Though trained during the Vietnam era, Alan discovered strengths within himself that had been sharpened by years in show business. Discipline, leadership, coordination, and focus—qualities learned while guiding a performing group—translated powerfully into military life. He excelled in drills, became a demonstrator for bayonet exercises, achieved the highest rifle test scores, and earned three trophies during training.

Yet for Alan, the real reward was not recognition.

It was the lesson that life’s greatest guidance often comes in whispers, not shouts. Sometimes the path we imagine for ourselves is not the one we are meant to walk. Sometimes purpose reveals itself only when we become quiet enough to listen.

For Alan Osmond, that season of uncertainty became one of the most defining experiences of his life—proof that faith, timing, and courage can redirect a future in ways no one could have predicted.
