George Strait Honored with ASCAP Founders Award at 51st Annual Ceremony

Nashville, TN — Country music legend George Strait, affectionately known as “King George”, was honored with the Founders Award, the most prestigious recognition presented by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), during the organization’s 51st annual awards ceremony at the Music City Center.

The Founders Award is reserved for pioneering songwriters and performers who have made an indelible impact on music and culture. Strait joins an elite list of past honorees including Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson, Billy Joel, Paul McCartney, Rod Stewart, Steven Tyler, and Stevie Wonder.

As part of the tribute, several artists took the stage to celebrate Strait’s legacy. Garth Brooks performed a medley of Strait’s biggest hits, Alan Jackson sang “Let’s Fall to Pieces Together,” and Lee Ann Womack delivered a heartfelt rendition of “Troubadour.”

Strait, who holds a record-breaking 60 career No. 1 singles, said he was “shocked” to receive the honor.

“It’s kind of like when I got inducted into the Hall of Fame. You don’t think about those things… it might be in the back of your mind, with your fingers crossed, that maybe one day you’ll have an honor like that. But it’s not something you expect as you go through touring and making records. I feel real fortunate to have this happen.”

Reflecting on his decades-long career, Strait also shared one personal regret: stepping away from songwriting years ago. However, he revealed that he has recently returned to writing music more than ever before, sparking anticipation for future projects.

In addition to Strait’s milestone recognition, the ASCAP Awards also highlighted the Song of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, and the Top 5 most-played country songs of the year.

Strait remains as relevant as ever. In addition to this latest honor, he is currently nominated for Entertainer of the Year at the upcoming CMA Awards, underscoring his enduring influence on the country music industry.
