Rory Feek Shares Emotional Update After Daughter Indy Undergoes Open Heart Surgery
For Rory Feek, the past few days have been filled with fear, hope, prayer, and overwhelming gratitude.
His daughter, Indiana Feek — lovingly known as “Indy” — recently underwent open heart surgery to repair a condition she has lived with since birth. Now, after an emotional and difficult journey, Rory is sharing the encouraging news that the operation was successful and Indy is on the road to recovery.
A Journey That Began At Birth
Indy was born in 2014 to Rory and Joey Feek, the beloved husband-and-wife duo behind Joey + Rory.
Shortly after Indy’s birth, Joey was diagnosed with cervical cancer. Her heartbreaking passing in 2016, less than a month after Indy turned two years old, deeply touched fans around the world and became one of country music’s most emotional stories.
In addition to losing her mother at such a young age, Indy was also born with Down syndrome and a heart condition known as a Ventricular septal defect, commonly referred to as a VSD — a small hole in the heart.
As Rory previously explained on his blog, many children born with Down syndrome also face heart complications. While some VSDs close naturally over time, Indy’s condition eventually required surgical intervention.
Although doctors assured Rory the condition was not immediately life-threatening, leaving it untreated could have affected both Indy’s quality of life and her long-term health.
A Father’s Hardest Moment
Originally, Indy’s surgery was scheduled for June 24th. However, due to an emergency involving another patient, the procedure was postponed until the following day.
Throughout the process, Rory openly shared the emotional challenge of preparing his daughter for surgery.
As a father, he admitted that helping Indy emotionally understand what was happening was the hardest part of all.
“But I also know that when it’s done, it’s going to make her life better,” he wrote before the operation.
Fans across the country responded with prayers and support, anxiously waiting for updates once the surgery finally began.
“The Hole In Her Heart Is Closed”
Later that evening, Rory shared the long-awaited news in a blog post titled “recovering.”
Indy was now resting in the ICU following a successful operation.
Rory described the emotional moment when he and his wife, Rebecca Feek, entered Indy’s hospital room after surgery. Seeing their little girl frightened, confused, and surrounded by medical tubes and wires immediately brought tears to their eyes.
“She’s frightened and in pain,” Rory wrote, explaining that Indy did not fully understand why everything was happening around her.
At the same time, he and Rebecca were struggling emotionally as well, hurting because they could not simply take her pain away.
Throughout the surgery, a nurse provided hourly updates to the family. At one point, doctors discovered something unexpected that briefly caused concern. Thankfully, it turned out not to be serious.
After several tense hours, the surgeon finally emerged with the news everyone had been praying for.
“The hole in her heart is closed, the blockages are cleared, and she should make a full recovery and live a full, long life. Thank you Jesus,” Rory wrote.
The Road To Recovery
Although the surgery was successful, Indy still faces a significant recovery period ahead.
Rory shared that she is expected to remain in the ICU for approximately a week before returning home to continue healing over the next six to eight weeks.
For now, Indy is slowly moving between sleep and wakefulness — “peaceful, and upset,” as Rory gently described it. At this stage, she is only allowed to drink water while her body continues recovering from the major procedure.
Still, amid the exhaustion and emotion, Rory remains focused on hope.
“It’s hard to believe,” he wrote, “but one day soon, Indy will be running and playing with her friends again. And today will only be a memory.”
